Regina's So-Called Blog

So I've finally reserved a little space on the "interweb" to record my random musings. The real challenge will be stepping away from my rampant pop culture consumption to actually write down my thoughts regarding said pop culture tidbits or anything else that crosses my mind. Or will it just become like my Facebook page that I never visit? Only time will tell.

AMAs 2017 - Bruno Wins Big!

Per his request, pic of Bruno with 7 AMAs
photoshopped in, since he couldn't attend the ceremony.
Pink and Kelly Clarkson sound great. Two great vocalists together.

Just realized the new character on Fox show “Star” (he plays Jahil’s nephew Angel) is played by Diana Ross’ son, who’s standing next to her at the AMA’s. And he’s the one who’s married to Ashley Simpson. Interesting.

Gotta admit--I really like this Demi Lovato song “Sorry, not Sorry.” I hear it on the radio a lot and often find myself humming it.

Oh no. Someone told sweet little Hailee Steinfeld that she needs to sex up her image. Hence the thigh high boots and booty-grazing jacket that reveals some cheek on the back view. I’ll miss you, sweet Hailee.

Just saw a quick glimpse of the DJ Khaled video for “I’m the One.” Did not realize Bieber was on that track (though really--isn’t everyone on that track? It features like 5 singers/rappers). What is up with the platinum blond hair, Biebs? No,  just no. So is DJ Khaled like David Guerra, Avicii, Zedd, Mark Ronson, etc, meaning he never actually performs on his tracks? He just writes/produces it and hires vocal talent to front the track?

Keith Urban is jamming out to Shawn Mendes. That country boy loves him some pop music. And 19-year-old Shawn wins Adult Contemporary Artist. Ok then.

Selena Gomez made her big comeback, post-kidney transplant. Apparently there is some controversy over whether she sang live or lip synced. I don’t know her music well enough to judge, but it sounded pretty perfect and I don’t generally regard Selena as a strong singer so...There were very few close-ups, lots of long shots, and the whole performance just lacked energy. She looked wiped when it was over, but she didn’t do much. Maybe too soon to return to the stage. By comparison, Demi sounded very good but not perfect, and I think she’s a stronger singer than Selena. Pink and Kelly sounded awesome, but they ARE awesome singers, in a different class.

Damn the Chainsmokers have a lot of nominations.

Christina Aguilera during AMA performance
What has Christina Aguilera done to her face? She doesn’t quite look like herself. And those ridiculous lips. Too much filler. Thankfully she sounds like herself. But she changed the songs a little too much. I’m sure she was trying to put her own stamp on it. Nah--just mimic Whitney. That’s what we really want. Just sing it just like she did. And please note: this undeniably live performance was full of close-ups on Christina’s quivering, artificial, duck lips. Pink looks so proud of her friend Christina (remember they did the Lady Marmalade remake together). Apparently some folks took her “stank face” for disgust when actually she was appreciating the power of Christina’s vocals (she said so on Twitter). With musicians, stank face is usually a good thing. Initially I read confusion on her face, but subsequent camera shots looked more like appreciation to me.I love my girl Gaga--can’t wait to see her live in 2 weeks--but that outfit is not flattering. Her voice was on point though, as usual.
Ugh, Macklemore. But yay Skylar Grey. She’s good. I didn’t realize she was behind the pretty voice on the hook of “Glorious” (the only part of the song I like).

Just caught a glimpse of hottie Justin Hartley (Kevin on “This Is Us”) dancing in his seat to “Feel It Still” (that’s the name of the song?!) by newcomers (?) Portugal the Man (weird name). Please stop. Definitely less hot when dancing.

This stripped down version of “Stay” by Zedd feat. Alessia Cara is pretty cool. She sounds good, as do the strings behind her.

Gaga wins pop/rock female. Her little monsters (that’s what her fans are called) voted her to victory. And she’s wearing a more flattering outfit.

We already had DJ Khaled and how there’s a singer/rapper named Khalid too?! Confusion ensuing.

I feel like this “Thunder” song by Imagine Dragons is very different from their other songs. More pop, more dancey, less rock. I like it better than their previous stuff.

Performing on the side of a hotel building--just another day for Pink. She is amazing! And no she is not lip syncing. She doesn’t do that. She told Ellen she sometimes throws in some extra breaths when singing during acrobatics to make sure the audience knows she’s singing. LOL. How much must it cost to insure her???

Um, why are they standing for former One Directioner Niall Horan? I like this song, “Slow Hands,” but the performance really isn’t that impressive. I like One D’s solo efforts (Niall, Harry, Liam and Zayn), but none of them are terribly impressive solo vocalists. I think they harmonized well together, and individually they’re all okay singers (some better than others), but just okay.

Ooh Kelly Clarkson is singing “Miss Independent,” taking it back to where it all started. Her first cd was so great. So was the second one. I’m reserving judgment on the new cd, but she sounded fantastic tonight. Alas she’s made another questionable fashion choice though.

Demi Lovato is sitting next to Nick Jonas. Anything to that???

BTS, a k-pop (Korean pop) boy band, is a big deal. Apparently their success in America in principally online. They have 7 members. That’s a lotta boys to split your money with. Some of these young girls in the audience are losing their minds. Wow.

Bruno (Mars, of course) wins Artist of the Year, and all is right in the world. They played a cute video of him accepting in a moving minivan.

Diana Ross was, is and will always be a diva extraordinaire. She looks great, and she sounds pretty good--for 73. That hair! Those gowns! Everyone in the room over 40 is loving her medley. Some of the younger ones seem to be enjoying it too. Kelly Clarkson is feeling every minute. Jared Leto looks bored though. LOL. I was unfamiliar with a couple of the songs. Why did no one consult me on the setlist? Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson were there to support her.

Bruno won 7 awards! They didn’t present most of them on camera. I’m so happy for him! But let’s see how he does with the Grammys this year.

Oscars 2017

THE WINNERS!
Why is that young girl with Mel Gibson? He’s 60 (though frankly he looks older); she’s 26ish. She’s younger than six of his children. And she just gave birth to his ninth child five weeks ago. Gee, I wonder what she sees in him. My guess is $$$.

What is Leslie Mann smuggling under those layers? Looks like it should be Belle’s dress from Beauty and the Beast. Tale as old as time, song as old as wine...

Did Michelle Williams bring her Dawson’s Creek bestie Busy Phillips? Yes, she did. I think it’s so cute that their friendship, borne a decade ago on a WB tv show, is still so strong. Busy has been at Michelle’s side for years on the awards circuit.

Nude/gold dresses trend: Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman. While I do not love Emma Stone, I do love her fab fringes. I also love Kidman’s dress. Jessica Biel’s gold gown is hideous.

Justin Timberlake opens with a rousing, crowd-pleasing rendition of “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” Sadly this will be the highlight of the show for me. It’s all downhill from here. Check it out here: http://oscar.go.com/video/oscar-highlights-2017/justin-timberlakes-oscar-performance

Thumbs up to Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue. Favorite line: This year in film, black people saved NASA (Hidden Figures) and white people saved jazz (La La Land).

Alicia Vikander (love her!), last year’s Best Supporting Actress, presents Best Supporting Actor to…Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), looking like a young Lou Gossett, Jr. I’ve liked him ever since the USA show “The 4400.” He seems like a real genuine dude.

Best Makeup & Hairstyling goes to Suicide Squad.

Best Costume goes to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The cast of Hidden Figures. Taraji (center) looks fierce. Octavia (right) does plus-size so right. Janelle is adorable, but her dress is a bit much (left).

The 16-year-old from Moana sang beautifully. Such poise and composure in front of a massive international audience. Impressive.

Ellen brought pizza, Chris Rock brought Girl Scout cookies, and Jimmy Kimmel…dropped little bags of candy from the ceiling Hunger-Games-arena-style.

Arrival (aka the most boring movie about aliens ever made) wins Best Sound Editing.

Hacksaw Ridge wins Sound Mixing. The lead mixer, Kevin O’Connell, has been nominated 20 times before without a win, but tonight was his night. Finally!

Best Supporting Actress, as expected, goes to Viola Davis (Fences), radiant in red. Her strategy to push herself in the supporting category rather than the lead category worked. No one else stood a chance this year.

Best Foreign Language Film (if anyone cares—I don’t): The Salesman, and Iranian movie. Oh wait—I do care because of the back story. The Iranian director was initially worried that he wouldn’t be able to attend the Oscars because of the Muslim ban. Once that was cleared up, he made a conscious decision not to attend in protest. The woman who accepted on his behalf read a statement from him explaining his position.

Dakota Johnson’s (50 Shades of Gray) dress is awful. Seriously looks like you could stick a curtain rod through the shoulder area and hang it up as draperty. Like Carol Burnett could have worn it in a skit on her variety show. (RIP Carol.) Ugh.

Best Production Design: freakin’ La La Land (I’m not a fan.)

They just brought a busload of tourists into the ceremony. These morons somehow had no idea they were walking into the Oscar ceremony. Seriously? They are clearly not movie fans. I’ve had this on my calendar since like November. If you don’t even realize the Oscars are happening today, you are NOT a movie fan.

Best Visual Effects: The Jungle Book

Why is Chris Messina (“The Mindy Project”) at the Oscars? And for that matter, why is Gael Garcia Bernal?

Best Film Editing: Hacksaw Ridge

Jimmy Kimmel just tweeted Donald Trump since Trump hadn’t tweeted about the Oscars.

Best Cinematography: freakin’ La La Land

A special Oscars edition of Kimmel’s Mean Tweets. Hilarious! Check it out here: http://oscar.go.com/video/oscar-highlights-2017/watch-mean-tweets-2017-oscars-edition

Best Score: freakin’ La La Land

Original Song: freakin’ La La Land

Back to real awards--Original Screenplay (presented by former screenplay winners Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, still feuding with Kimmel, who had the band “play him off” while presenting the nominees) goes to Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester By the Sea. Matt Damon is largely responsible for bringing the movie to the screen.

Adapted Screenplay: Moonlight. I’m not sure what it’s adapted from. Didn’t think it was a book…

Halle Berry, as always, is beautiful. Her hair, on the other hand…Bride of Frankenstein or finger-in-a-socket. Take your pick. A less attractive woman could not get away with that. And I’m not dissing her natural hair. After all, I’m sitting here rocking a fro myself, but Halle’s 'do  isn’t all that natural. It’s the product of some serious curling iron action—hence the big, stiff curls. It’s just way too Whitney Houston circa late 80s, a look that was best left 30 years in the past.

Best Director: freakin’ La La Land

We still have the last 3 big awards, and we’re already 25 minutes into overtime. Why do they even bother scheduling this thing for just 3 hours?

Best Actor: Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea). Denzel does not look pleased. I only recently became aware of the controversy surrounding Casey’s nomination and now win. The stink of a sexual harassment claim against him (settled out of court) is still fresh with some of the acting community.

Best Actress: Emma Stone for freakin’ La La Land. (Eye roll.)

Best Picture: freakin’, frakkin’ La La Land. Wait—HOLD THE PHONE—Old man Warren Beatty and old lady Faye Dunaway read the wrong winner. It’s Steve Harvey and the Miss America (or was it Universe?) pageant—except wayyyyyy bigger—all over again! Moonlight is the actual winner of Best Picture. OMG! Warren and Faye somehow had the wrong envelope (a duplicate of Emma’s best actress envelope). La La was up there gushing about their win, and BAM—you didn’t win. They very graciously handed the award over to its rightful team from Moonlight. Wow. This one is going down in the history books. Check it out here:
