Regina's So-Called Blog

So I've finally reserved a little space on the "interweb" to record my random musings. The real challenge will be stepping away from my rampant pop culture consumption to actually write down my thoughts regarding said pop culture tidbits or anything else that crosses my mind. Or will it just become like my Facebook page that I never visit? Only time will tell.

Emmys 2016

Opening Skit highlight: James Corden and Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel reenacting Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” video!

Best Supporting Actor, Comedy: Louie Anderson for FX’s “Baskets.” Never heard of it? No surprise. I heard of it and chose not to watch it. Weird-looking show starring Zach Galifinakis.

Best Supporting Actress, Comedy: Kate McKinnon for SNL. She’s pretty funny and all, but I wanted someone from a regular scripted show to win. Though none of the nominees in this category really thrilled me, so whatevs.

Best Writing, Comedy: Master of None (Netflix), starring Aziz Ansari. I haven’t watched it yet, but I intend to. Always loved Aziz on “Parks & Recreation.” Aziz’s co-writer, a lesser known Asian-American man recommended Asian parents give a few of their kids cameras instead of violins so they can have more representation in Hollywood. LOL. Hey, he can say that.

Best Directing, Comedy: Transparent (Amazon), starring Jeffrey Tambor as a transgender (I think that’s the right term?). Still haven’t watched it, but I’ve read lots of good things, and it’s become quite the awards darling. But I really wanted “Veep” to win. I want “Veep” to win everything!!!

Best Actress, Comedy: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (HBO) for “Veep.” YESSSSSS! She keeps winning this category, and she deserves every single award. She is incredible on this equally incredible show. It’s so damn funny, and so is she. Awww—she just thanked her dad, who apparently died Friday! Can’t believe she’s there. Wow.

Tribute to Garry Shandling. Just letting you GS fans know in case you want to look it up online.

Best Actor, Comedy: Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent” (Amazon). I need to watch this show.

Best Reality Competition: “The Voice.” A network show finally won!

And I guess food at awards shows is officially a thing. Ellen with her pizza, Chris Rock with his Girl Scout cookies and now Jimmy with his homemade pb&j sandwiches. They’re seriously handing them out to everyone. He mentioned that no one better have a peanut allergy though because they could only afford one epi-pen. Ba dump bump.

Kerry Washington is soooo pregnant. She must be due very, very soon.

Best Writing, Limited Series/Movie: “The People Vs. OJ” (FX). This category was basically several eps of “OJ” competing against several eps of “Fargo.” I personally enjoyed the “OJ” series. I watched all 10 eps in like 2 days this summer. I just wanted to keep going.

Best Supporting Actress, Limited Series: Regina—cool name—King “American Crime” (ABC). A very uncomfortable but well-done show.
Best Direction, Limited Series: Lot of “OJ” nominees here, but “The Night Manager” (AMC) takes it. It starred Hugh Laurie (“House”) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki from “Avengers”) and was based on the John Le Carre novel. It looked pretty moody and atmospheric, but I wasn’t interested enough to watch it.

Best Supporting Actor, Limited Series: More OJ, Night Manager, and Fargo, and the award goes to Sterling K. Brown, who played Chris Darden in “OJ.” Lots of love for him in the room. Even he said, “You guys may not have known my name, but you checked the box anyway and thank you.”

Best Actress, Limited Series: Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark in “OJ.” She brought the real Marcia Clark with her to the ceremony too. No surprise she thanked Ryan Murphy for changing her life (with “American Horror Story” and now “OJ”), but I had to google “why did sarah paulson thank holland taylor” to find out that they’re dating! Holland is 73, and Sarah is 41. That is a monster age difference! I’m shocked by huge age differences be they straight or gay. (By the way, did you hear Mel Gibson’s 26-year-old gf is preggers???)

Best Movie: “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” (BBC). Now they decide to separate movie from limited series???

Best Limited Series: “OJ” wins again. So glad I watched this series. It really was gripping. How diversified is Ryan Murphy? “Glee,” “American Horror Story,” and “OJ.” That’s three very different genres.

Matt Damon showed up to harass and humiliate Jimmy Kimmel on stage after Jimmy’s Emmy loss. I do enjoy their ongoing (fake) feud. Fave part: Matt says, “Hey, Jimmy, tell your mom I like them apples.” (I adore “Good Will Hunting.”)

Writing, Drama: “Game of Thrones.” One of the winners thanked actress Amanda Peet. Had to look into that. Turns out Amanda Peet is married to the GoT co-creator and showrunner. Sadly for her, that’s a bigger claim to fame than anything she’s done career-wise. Sorry, Amanda.

Directing, Drama: It’s beginning to look a lot like a “Game of Thrones” kind of night, as it wins again.

I am about sick of them trying to play everyone off the stage with that damn music. It’s so rude! I don’t care who’s up there, how unknown they are, or how insignificant they may seem—it’s their f-in’ moment. Let them have it! It feels like they start playing after like 30 seconds. Give it a minute. At least. Literally, a minute.

Supporting Actress, Drama: Maggie Smith, “Downton Abbey.” Pretty funny because Jimmy Kimmel joked that if someone didn’t show up to accept their award, it would go to the next person on the list. He specifically called out Maggie, whose won 3 times and has not shown up to accept any of her Emmys. Jimmy took her award and announced that it will be in the lost and found when she’s ready. LOL.

Supporting Actor, Drama: Ben Mendehlson, “Bloodline” (Netflix). Love this show and love him in it. You should all check it out.

Oh no—the In Memoriam segment. Up and comer Tori Kelly is singing an acoustic version of “Hallelujah,” an appropriately sad song. It’s always surprising how many famous people I forgot died in the past year. The penultimate image was probably the most recent death: Gene Wilder. The final image was the one that matters most to me, and the one that made me cry: Prince, in a beautiful shot of him taking a bow after his SuperBowl halftime performance. Sigh. #stillsad

Actor, Drama: Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot” (FX). That’s pretty shocking, very underdog. I really enjoyed the first season of this show, but they lost me on season 2. Rami is the best part of the show though. I stayed longer than I really wanted to just for him.

Actress, Drama: YEEEESSSSS! Tatiana Maslany, “Orphan Black” (BBC America). I just screamed aloud in excitement. This woman is amazing! She plays about 8 different characters, all clones, and you easily forget it’s one actress playing all of the parts. This is so deserved.

Very trendy picks for Drama Actor and Actress. Good for you, Emmys.

Comedy Series: YEEEESSSSS! “Veep.” I love this show! It’s so damn funny. It’s so well-written, and the comic delivery is impeccable. It’s a little crass and offensive, but that’s what makes it so funny. I wish they made more than 10 eps a year because I can’t get enough of it. And I think it’s still getting better.

For some reason, they trotted out Jimmy Smits and Dennis Franz to present the final award of the night…

Drama Series: “Game of Thrones.” Still trendy, 6 years into its run. Still event tv. I’m a fan but not a superfan.

So HBO ended up taking Best Comedy and Best Drama. They don’t have as many great shows as they used to, but I guess ya only need a few gems to make your mark. And they finished on time (thanks to the rude playing off of winners).
